Taranaki Airs sign Tobias Cameron for 2024 NBL Season
Taranaki Airs head coach Sam Mackinnon has been the busiest coach so far during the NZ NBL Free Agency period, securing three players ahead of the 2024 season. Today, the Taranaki Airs are thrilled to announce the return of Tobias Cameron.
“Tobias, he brings it everyday" Mackinnon said when asked about Tobias recently. "I've seen from afar the last years in college and just the way he competes, is what I like about Tobias.” Mackinnon added.
Mackinnon who is still working as an Assistant Coach with South East Melbourne Phoenix in the Australian NBL is pleased with the initial signings as he looks to create a culture and environment where genuine community engagement and a determination to develop the best version of themselves as players and people is the norm.
“It’s important that we get the mix right from the outset, and that the players coming to play with the Airs are aware that we will work extremely hard in all facets of our game, on and off-court. Whether it’s working in the community, in the gym or on-court, Airs fans, members and our corporate partners can rest assured we will be committed to and aspiring for excellence at all times.”
The addition of Tobias is a huge step in the right direction for the Airs as they look to create a potent roster and winning culture with the son of Kiwi legend Pero Cameron joining his younger brother Flynn.
Tobias returns to the Airs, where he had a successful rookie season, averaging just shy of 8 points per game. Cameron joined the Airs after five year college career at Abilene Christian University, accumulating a kiwi record 142 games in Men's NCAA Division 1 Basketball.
Mackinnon is looking forward to taking reigns of the Airs and working closely with Tobias, as he looks to establish himself within the Airs organisation.
"He'll always give you a 100% effort and I think just getting his feet wet last year, maybe 8 games with the Airs, he's another returning player that gives us depth in the wings and for someone looking to make that jump. Having Tobias on board is another key signing for the club". Coach Mackinnon added.
Taranaki Steelformers Airs kick off the 2024 season against Manawatu Jets on March 30th.
